1. READ THIS FIRST W ARNING The Alar m should be per manently wired to the mains b y a qualified electr ician in accordance with IEE wiring regulations (BS7671). Install the Carbon Mono xide Alar m (CO Alar m) in e v er y room that contains a fuel burning appliance, par ticularly rooms where people spend a lot of time e.
What to do when the alarm sounds: (1) Open the doors and windows to v entilate the area. (2) T ur n off all fuel appliances where possib le and stop them. (The alar m can be silenced immediately b y pushing the test/hush button). (3) Ev acuate the proper ty lea ving the doors and windows open.
The CO Alar m will automatically reset once the CO has cleared. Pressing the test/hush b utton resets the CO Alar m immediately (below 300ppm CO). If CO is still present the red light and hor n will tur n on again after about 4 minutes .
Many are killed each y ear , and many more suff er ill health from Carbon Mono xide (CO) poisoning. CO is an in visible , odour less , tasteless and e xtremely to xic gas. It is produced by appliances and v ehicles b ur n- ing fuels, such as coal, oil, natur al/bottled gas, par affin, wood, petrol, diesel, charcoal etc.
A high le v el of CO f or a shor t period (e.g. 350 ppm CO f or 30 minutes) will cause the same symptoms, a slight headache, as a lo wer le v el f or a longer time (e .g. 150 ppm f or 90 minutes). T able A sho ws how e xposure to diff erent concentrations of CO gener ally aff ects people.
2.3 What happens when y our CO Alarm detects Carbon Mono xide ? When the Alar m detects potentally dangerous le v els of CO , it flashes the red alar m light and then sounds a loud alar m if the CO persists. The digital displa y indicates the CO le vel in par ts per million, ppm CO , (Model Ei261DEN only).
NEVER IGNORE THE ALARM. Pre-Alarm: When the alar m detects ov er 50ppm CO the red light flashes e v er y 2 seconds. This helps locate CO leaks as the unit giv es an indication straight a wa y . (Without this f eature the CO le v el would need to be at 50ppm CO f or 90 minutes f or an indication to be giv en).
When the test b utton is held f or 20 seconds the peak reading resets to zero . (Cov er the horn with a cloth to muffle the loud alarm). Please note that the memor y will also be reset when the unit is remov ed from the mounting plate . 3. WHERE T O PLA CE CO ALARMS 3.
3.2 Unsuitable Locations Do not place the CO Alar m in any of the f ollo wing areas. (1) In the immediate vicinity of a cooking appliance (k eep it at least 1 metre hor izontally from it). (2) Outside the b uilding. (3) In an enclosed space (e.g. in or below a cupboard).
3.3 If locating the CO alarm in a r oom with a fuel burning appliance (see figure 2) • If it is mounted on a wall, it should be located at a height g reater than the height of any door or windo w b ut still be at least 150mm from the ceiling. • If it is mounted on the ceiling it should be at least 300mm from any w all or light fitting.

4. INST ALLING Y OUR CARBON MONO XIDE ALARMS The Alar m is designed to be per manently mounted, using its own b uilt-in ter minal b lock to connect it to the mains. The mounting plate can be screw ed directly to the ceiling. Alter nativ ely it can be screw ed to a standard junction bo x (BS 4662 single gang accessor y bo x).
INST ALLA TION PR OCEDURE (1) Select a location complying with the abov e advice . (2) Disconnect the A C mains supply from the circuit that is going to be used. (3) The house wir ing must be connected to the ter minal b lock on the mounting plate as f ollo ws: L: Live - connect to the house wires coloured brown or marked L.
in Figure 6. (7) Carefully align the mounting plate and scre w into place. Connect the wires to the ter minal bloc k. With recessed wiring, ensure the rear gasket seals around the edge of the hole in the ceiling or w all. This is to pre v ent air draughts aff ecting the CO gas entering the alar m.

5. TESTING Y OUR CO ALARM (1) Regularly check that the green mains po wer light is on. The unit cannot detect CO if the mains po wer is not on and the rechargeab le batter y is depleted. (If it is off check circuit break ers, fuses , wiring etc). (2) T est the unit weekly b y pressing the test/hush button.
T esting with Carbon Mono xide The unit chec ks f or CO e very 4 seconds and as soon as it detects CO it flashes the red light (as per T able B) to confir m that is detecting CO gas. Alter nativ ely: Pressing the test b utton causes the unit to check f or CO - this is the F ast CO T est Mode .
6. MAINT AINING Y OUR CO ALARM Clean the outside case b y occasionally wiping with a clean damp cloth, (disconnect the mains supply at the distribution/fuse board first). Do not use any cleaning agents , b leaches, detergents or polishes , including those in aerosol cans.
After 5 y ears operation, the amber light will flash once e v er y 40 seconds (without a beep) to indicate the sensor should be replaced. (Note: cov er the ‘replace sensor’ label on side of unit with the ne w ‘replace unit’ by label supplied with the ne w sensor).
CO Alar ms are fitted both near and in bedrooms, par ticularly if bedroom doors are closed at night. Additionally install in rooms where members of the household spend m uch of their time, and in rooms with potential sources of CO gas. (3) The CO Alar m may not be heard.
8. HO W T O PR O TECT Y OUR F AMIL Y F ollow these guidelines to reduce the risk of Carbon Mono xide poisoning. (1) Know and look out f or tell-tale signs that Carbon Mono xide ma y be present. These include:- - The CO Alar m warning of abnor mal le vels .
(7) Ne v er use a gas cooker or a barbecue f or home heating. (8 Children should be warned of the dangers of CO poisoning and instr ucted ne v er to touch, or inter- f ere with the CO Alar m. Do not allow small children to press the test/hush b utton as they could be subjected to e xcessiv e noise when the unit alar ms.
Electromagnetic : Complies with BS EN 50270 Compatibility T est/Hush Button : Chec ks electronics and hor n. When the unit is alarming, after sensing CO, pressing the test/hush button will immediately stop the horn (the red light will continue to flash).
Rechargeab le : Fully charged cells can pow er unit in standby f or o v er 4 weeks. Lithium Cells: It can pow er the unit in alar m f or ov er 2 hours . The unit beeps e v er y 40 seconds if cells are depleted. Interconnect : Up to 12, Ei 261EN/261DEN Alar ms can be interconnected, so that when one senses CO , all alarm.
10. GETTING THE CO ALARM SER VICED If y our CO Alar m f ails to work after you ha ve carefully read all the instructions, chec k ed the unit has been installed correctly , and is receiving AC po wer , - see “How to disconnect and remo ve the Alarm” in section 5.
12. TR OUBLESHOO TING 1. ALARM DOES NO T WORK WITH THE TEST B UTT ON: (1) Chec k that the green mains pow er light is on. If it is off chec k the wir ing, fuse, circuit break ers etc.
(2) Ensure there are no fumes in the area (e.g. paint, thinners, alcohol, hair spr a y , chemical cleaners aerosol spr a ys etc). (3) Ensure there is no outdoor source of CO in the vicinity (e.g. a car with engine running, heavy traffic , hea vy air pollution, barbecue fumes etc).
