1 Setting Up the Projector 9 Setting Up th e Projector T his chapter tells you how to unpack yo ur pro jector and set i t up for a presentatio n. The projector must be connected to a computer or a video source such as a VCR, DVD player, camcorder, dig ital camera, or laser disc player before it can project any images.

12 Setting Up the Projector Installing Batteries in the Remote Control The remote c ontrol operates the projector and lets you access its Effects fe atures. You can also run your presen tation with the r emote and use it as a wireless mouse. Follow these steps to instal l the batter ies: 1.
Setting Up the Projector 13 Positioning the Projector Before con necting the proje ctor, you nee d to dec ide where to place it. The location you choos e depends on th e size of the audience (and room) and yo ur presen tation st yle. ■ Place the pr ojector o n a sturdy, le vel sur face, between 3 and 4 8 feet from the scr een.
14 Setting Up the Projector When proj ecting from a tabl e, the ideal arrangement i s to set the projec tor fl at on its s urface. T his way, y ou can use the le ns shift k nob (instead o f raising th e proje ctor’s f eet) to p osition the i mage on -screen.

Setting Up the Projector 17 Connecting to a PC Desk top Computer To connect the p roject or to your PC desktop comp uter, you need to: ■ Connect the computer video cable and computer moni tor cable .

To use the remote control as a wireless mouse, connect the PS/2 mouse or USB cable i ncluded w ith the proje ctor to the MOUSE terminal on the sq uare end of the mai n cable. 3. Disconnect your mo use from the mouse port on the back of your computer and replace it with the other en d of the PS/2 mo use or USB cable.
20 Setting Up the Projector Conne ctin g the A udi o Cabl e 1. If you’ll be using audi o, connect one end of the 3.5-mm audio cable to th e Audio port on th e projector . 2. Connect the other end of the audio cab le to the spea ker or audio out port on the computer’ s sound card.

Connect the other end of the seri al cable to the s erial por t on the back of your computer.
24 Setting Up the Projector Connecting to a Desktop Macintosh To connect the p rojector to your deskto p Macintos h, you need to: ■ Connect th e comput er video cab l e and comput er monitor c able .

26 Setting Up the Projector 5. If you also w ant to view the p resentation on your computer’s monitor, connect the mo nitor cable to the p rojector’s Monitor Out port. (If necessary, attach the Macintosh monitor adapter to the monitor cabl e, as shown belo w, and then connect the adapter to the pr ojector’ s Monit or Out po rt.

Th is illu strati on s hows the connections you’ll be making: 1. Connec t the small end of the main cab le to the pr ojector’ s Mouse/Com port.

Connect the other end of the Mac serial cable to the printer or modem p ort on the back of your Mac intosh.
Setting Up the Projector 29 Connecting to a Macintos h laptop Your M acintosh laptop must have vi deo-ou t capabil ity in orde r to connect to the pr ojector.
30 Setting Up the Projector 3. Connect the other end of the cable to the video- out port or monitor po rt on your Mac intosh. If you can’ t connect the cab le to your Macintosh, you may need to use the Maci ntosh desktop adapter that came with your projector.

Setting Up the Projector 33 Making Other Computer Connections If you want t o connect a computer u sing the BNC cable or conne ct a high-end workstation or a Digital Vis ual Interface (DVI) source, follo w the i nst ructio ns b elow .
34 Setting Up the Projector Connecting to a High-End W orkstation Your Power Lite pro jector is cap able of re mapping inpu t resoluti ons up to 1600 × 120 0 pixels. Si nce 1280 × 1024 pixe ls is the def ault resol ution fo r most l eading workst ations, y our proj ector is ide al for displayi ng workstation vide o outp ut.
Setting Up the Projector 35 Connecting to Other Video Sourc es You ca n con nect a VC R, cam cor der, la ser disc player , D VD pla yer, digital came ra, or a ny other c ompa tible vi deo s ource to your pro jecto r. The projector supports HDTV, NTSC, PAL, and SE CAM video formats, and auto matically detects and identif ies the video format.
36 Setting Up the Projector Connecting RCA Cables Befo re star ting, make sure the pr ojector a nd your VCR or other v ideo sourc e are turned off. 1. Connect th e yellow RCA plug o n one end o f the RCA vi deo cab le to the pr ojector’ s Video port.
Setting Up the Projector 37 Connecting S-Video or Co mponent Video Befo re star ting, make sure the pr ojector and your VCR or othe r vide o sourc e are turned off. 1. For S-Vi deo, insert one end of an S -Video cable int o the proje ctor’s S-Video connector.

2 Using the Projector 39 Using the Projector O nce you have co nnected your p rojector to your other eq uipment (as de scribed in Chapter 1), you’re read y to turn it on, ad just th e image, and give your presentation.
40 Using the Projector Turning On the Projector Follow these steps to turn on the p rojector : 1. Connect one end o f the p ower cord to the p rojector’s power inlet.
Using the Projector 41 ■ If you’ve connected more than one computer and/or vi deo source, you may ne ed to press the Computer or Video button on top of the projecto r to select the cor rect source. (Allow a few seconds f or the proje ctor to sync up af ter pressin g the button.
42 Using the Projector If you’re using a Macintosh laptop with OS 9.x or earlier: You may need to set up your system to display on the proje ctor scree n as well as the L CD scree n. Follow th ese step s: 1. From the Ap ple menu, sele ct Control Panels , then click Monitors and Sound.
Using the Projector 43 3. To disp lay the entire d esktop on bot h your pro jector sc reen and LCD screen , clic k the Arrange tab. (If you don’t se e this tab, make sure it is not hidden by another window on your screen.) 4. Click Mirror Displays in the lower corner of th e screen.
44 Using the Projector Sleep Mode When the pr oject or has not receiv ed any input signals f or 30 minutes , it automatically turns of f the projecto r lamp and enters “sleep mo de.” In sleep mode, only a minimum amou nt of the projec tor’s circ uitry remains on.
Using the Projector 45 Rotate the zoom ring to enlarge o r reduce the i mage. If the image still isn’ t large eno ugh, you may need to move the projector f arther away fro m the screen. Yo u can also use the E-Zoom button on the remote control to zo om in on a porti on of the image.
46 Using the Projector Adjusting the Height of th e Image You can adjus t the h eight of the image using the lens shift knob on the side of the projecto r and the pro jector’s feet. Using the Lens Shift Knob Use the lens shi ft knob on the side of the pr ojector to raise or l ower the projected image.
Using the Projector 47 2. Raise o r lower the p rojector until the i mage is wher e you want it. 3. Release the levers to lock the feet in the ne w positi on and set th e projecto r dow n gently. 4. To fine-t une the he ight of th e project or, turn the f eet.
48 Using the Projector ■ Press the Tracking – and Tracking + butt ons to elimin ate th e vertic al stripes. ■ Press the Sync – and Sync + buttons to e liminate flashi ng, blurri ng, or vertical nois e on the scre en image.
Using the Projector 49 4. Press the button for the f unction you want to use. See pages 50 to 55 for m ore in formati on. For some fu nctions, you need to use the Enter button like a mouse to navigate on the screen. Press on the edge of the button with your thumb.
50 Using the Projector ■ To move the mouse pointer on the screen, aim the remote at the screen and press on the edge of the Ent er button with yo ur thumb. Or, grasp it between your th umb and f inger. This butto n works li ke the mou se butt on on ma ny laptop keyboar ds.
Using the Projector 51 Controlli ng the Projecto r While giving your p resentation, you may want to switch betwe en video source s, adjust th e volume, p ause the actio n or sound, or display a picture within your current video display.
52 Using the Projector Stopping Action You can use the remote control to stop th e action in yo ur video or comp ute r. ■ Press the Freeze button to stop the action and keep the current image on the screen. T he sound will co ntinue. ■ Press the Freeze button again to re-start it.
Using the Projector 53 3. When the windo w is located and sized th e way you want, press the Enter button. The menu disappears, and your video plays on the screen. 4. When yo u’re finis hed viewin g the picture-in- picture, pre ss the P in P button ag ain.
54 Using the Projector Using the Cursor/Stamp Arrow You can use the cursor stamp tool as a pointer and place cursor stamps anywhere on your scree n. You can choose from three types of stamps. 1. To activate the c ursor stamp, p ress button 1 on the remo te control .

Spotlighting Your Image With the Spot light tool, you can place a spotli ght box on part of the screen image. 1. To activate the s potlight tool, press button 3 on the re mote control.

3 Fine-tuning the Projector 59 Fine-tuning the Projector Y ou can use the proj ector’s on-screen me nus to adjust the i mage, sound, and other featur es. You can also create your ow n startup screen, customize the “drawing” tools, and vi ew information about the current disp lay settings and lamp status .

Fine-tuning the Projector 63 Adjusting the Image The Video menu lets you make adjustments to the pro jected image. The option s ava ilabl e in the menu depend on which s ource is connected to the pro jector: co mputer, compo site (RCA) video , S-vide o, or BNC (c omponent) vid eo.

Fine-tuning the Projector 65 Preset Allows you to save and recall settings fo r up to fiv e computer sessions includin g the resoluti on, trackin g, sync signal , brightness, co ntrast, sharpn ess, gamma, and position . (See “Saving a nd Recal ling Comp uter Settings” below.
66 Fine-tuning the Projector Saving and Recalling C omputer Settings When you are projecting from a computer source, you can sav e and recall sett ings (resol utio n, tra cki ng, syn c sig nal, and positi on) for up to five differe nt se ssio ns.

Setting Menu Cursor Speed Adjusts the cursor sp eed to low , medium, or high . Reset Returns all Effect menu items to th eir initial fac tory defaults.

72 Fine-tuning the Projector Creating a Screen Logo or Image You can transfer any image on your computer to the projec tor, and then use it as the image displayed when the proj ector is no t receiv ing a signal. Yo u can also set it to be displ ayed when you pres s the A/V M ute button on the remote, or as a startup screen.
Fine-tuning the Projector 73 Capturing and Saving th e Image Follow these steps to capture and s ave a logo or image: 1. Disp lay the image ( with the proj ector) . 2. Press the Menu button on the control panel or remote contro l to display the Main menu.

76 Fine-tuning the Projector Restoring the Default Sett ings The Reset All menu lets you return all the pr ojector settings to their defau lt val ues. Select Reset Al l and press the Enter button on the control panel or remote cont rol to display the confirmation sc reen.
4 Maintaining and Transporting the Projector 77 Maintaining and Transporting the Projector Y our projecto r needs little maintenanc e. All you need to do on a regular basis is keep the le ns clean. A ny dirt or sm ears on the lens will show up on your projec ted im age.
78 Maintaining and Transporting the Pr ojector Cleaning the Projec tor C ase Before you c lean the c ase, turn off the proj ector and unplug the po wer cord. ■ To remove dirt or dust, wipe th e case with a soft, dry, lint-free clo th. ■ To remove stubbor n dirt o r stains, mo isten a soft cloth with wate r and a neutral dete rgent.
Maintaining and Transporting the Projector 79 If the dirt is diff icult to remove or if the fil ter is torn, replace it. See page 9 2 for i nfo rmati on on order ing ac cess orie s. 4. If you need to replace the filter, pull up on the tab to release the filt er and rem ove it.
80 Maintaining and Transporting the Pr ojector Replacing the Lamp The projecti on lamp typically lasts fo r about 2000 hours of use. It is time to replace the lamp wh en: ■ The projec tion image gets darke r or starts to deterior ate. ■ The projection lamp light is flashi ng red or orange.
Maintaining and Transporting the Projector 81 4. Use a scre wdriv er to loose n the three sc rews hol ding the lamp i n place. (You cannot rem ove these scr ews.) 5. Lift the handl e and pull out the lamp . 6. Gentl y insert t he new lamp as shown below.
82 Maintaining and Transporting the Pr ojector Resetting the Lamp Tim er After you install a new lamp, you need to reset the ti mer so the projector c an keep track of how many hours it has been used. Follow these steps: 1. Pr ess the Help button and hold it down for at least 5 seconds.
5 Solv ing P roblem s 83 Solving Prob lems T his chapter helps you diagnose and solv e problems with your projec tor, and prov ides t echnical sup port inf ormation for pro blems you can’t solv e yourself. You can als o check the on-screen he lp by pressi ng the ? Help button on the control panel or remote c ontrol.
84 Solv in g Prob lem s Problems with the Projector If the projec tor is no t working cor rectly, first turn i t off and unplug it. Then plug the po wer cord back in and turn on the p rojector . If this does not solve the problem, check the warning lights on to p of the projector.
Solv ing P roblem s 85 See the informati on below for w hat to do when you see these war ning lights or encounter o ther sp ecific prob lems with the projecto r. The power light is f lashing orange and you canno t turn on the projector. The lamp is coo ling do wn.
86 Solv in g Prob lem s The temperature light is flashing orange. The pro jector i s too hot. P ress the Power button to turn it off and let it coo l for 5 minu tes b efore using it a gain. The temperature light is flashing red. The cool ing fan or te mper ature sens or is not w orking correc tly and the projector is too hot.
Solv ing P roblem s 87 Problems with the Image or Sound No image appears on the screen. ■ Check that the p ower light is green, not fl ashing, and the lens cover is off. ■ The projector may be in sleep mode. If the power light is orange, press the Power button to turn the projecto r on.
88 Solv in g Prob lem s If you’re using a PC laptop: ■ Press the function k ey that lets you display on an extern al monitor. It’s often labelled with an icon such as o r it may be labe lled CRT/LC D . You may have to hold down the Fn key while pressing it.
Solv ing P roblem s 89 The message Not Supported is displayed. Make sure your c omputer’s resolution do esn’t e xceed UXGA (1600 × 1 200) for the PowerL ite 9100i or SXGA (1 280 × 1024) for the PowerLite 8200i. Also make s ure the frequency i s supported by the projector.
90 Solv in g Prob lem s The image has a distorted, crooked, or keystone (trapezoid) shape. ■ This may be caused by extending the legs and tilting the pr ojector to position the image. Pres s the righ t + or l eft – side of the proje ctor’s K eysto ne button until the image is re ctangular.
Solv ing P roblem s 91 The colors of the image are not right or the im age is dark. ■ Try adju sting the br ight ness and c ontra st in th e Vi deo men u. ■ The colo r balance may b e incorr ect. If you’re d isplayi ng a computer image, use the Gamma option in the Video menu to adjust the balance of red, green, and blue.
