For example, use a sc a nning resoluti o n of up to 1 10 with a 300 dpi laser printer and up t o 170 w it h a 600 dpi laser printer.

4-6 Usi ng Special Effec ts Adju sting t h e Tone Co rrect ion Adjustin g the tone levels let s you change the pixel bri ghtness in the mid tones, high ligh t s, and shadows of an image wit hout dramatica lly c h ang i n g it. This m odi fies t he contrast i n image tones so th ey rep roduce w ith gr eater d etail.
Using Sp ecial E ffects 4-7 Eac h Outpu t check box c orresp onds t o the point nex t to it on th e tone c u rve. W h en you clic k the c heckb ox for a specific point, you can m ove that po i nt, but it is not a ffecte d by the movemen t of other points .

You see the follow ing dialo g box: Note : If the I m age Ty p e is set for gr ayscale or bl ack-and-white images, the Color Adjustmen t icon is dim med and canno t be selected.
Using Sp ecial E ffects 4-9 Setting the Gray Balance Intensity Neutral shades of gra y are produced by mixing the three colors in the im age in app r oxima tely equal p roportion s. Sometimes , how ever, t he resul ting gra y shad es are n ot tru ly neu tral.
4-10 Usin g Special Effec ts Using Color Filters Color filters can hel p eliminate c olor tinges (or an undes irable overa ll color t one) that ex ist in t he original. Y ou c an also use filt ers to give y ou r image a sp ecific co lor eff ect. Click an y p o in t i n the Color Filter wh eel to increas e that c olor in the im age.
Using S pecial Effec t s 4-11 Using Au tomatic Features The TWAIN advanced screen of fers two au tomatic featu res: ❏ Auto Exposu re, whi ch autom atical ly ad justs the exposure of an image an d sets the Highlig ht and Sha do w se tti ngs ❏ Auto Loca te, w hich loc ates a nd se lects the targ et im a ge i n the previ ew window.

Usin g EPSON Scan! II 5-1 Chapter 5 Using EPSON S can! II You c a n always scan an imag e usin g your TWA IN-com pliant image editin g applicatio n. However, if your applica tion i s not TWAIN-com pliant , you can u s e EPSON Scan ! II to scan the image and expor t it in a forma t you r appli cation c an open.

Your im age editin g software m ay b e con verting t he image to full 24-bit data, which requ ires more disk s p ac e. See your ap pli c at ion soft w a r e man u al for more i n fo r m ation.
6-6 T roublesho o ting Auto Loc ate does not wo rk when scanni ng two or mor e originals. Make sure none of the doc um en t s are t ouching one anoth er on the do cumen t table. If y ou have multip le images on a p age, Auto Locate sel ects the who l e page.
Troubl eshooting 6-7 The appl icati on softw are display s an error messa g e, freezes , or fails aft er s canning . Make su re you clos e the T WAIN sc reen befo re switchin g to your applic ation software. (D o n ot use th e Windows Minimize button.

Tr oublesh ootin g 6-13 The colors on your pri ntout seem different from those of the origi n al image. Chec k that yo u have c orrect l y pe rformed the print er cali bration proc ess in EP SON Sc an! II us i ng th e corr ect prin ter profil e. Recalib rate and then try sc anning yo u r im age again.
6-14 Trou bleshooting Images c a nnot b e scann ed at all or only a f ew dots appea r in the sca nned image. Try different EPSON TW AIN settings. Be aware th a t s ome setti ngs disabl e o thers . Also, dep ending on your sca nner, s ome feat ures may not be av ailable.
Tr oublesh ootin g 6-15 The imag e appears upside down and t runcated in yo ur ap plicatio n software afte r s c ann i n g. Bef ore you scan the im age, reduc e its fi le siz e to le ss than 1MB (for li ne art) or less than 5MB ( for c olor) by adjust ing the se tting s on the TWAIN advanced screen.

An image scanne d at 180 dpi and 200% has th e same number of dots as an i mage scanned a t 360 dpi an d 100 %.
