9 Getting Started 1 Getting St ar ted Congr atulations on y our purchas e of the HP Photo smart M415 digital camera , and welcome to the w orld of digital photograph y! This manual explains camera features y ou can use to ensure gre a t re s ul t s wh i l e e n joyi n g t he p h o to g ra p h ic ex p e rie n c e.

The camer a dock allo w s yo u to easily tr ansfer images to a compu ter , s end image s to a pri nter , v iew images on a telev ision , and rec harge batteri es in your camera .
11 Getting Started 2 . Install the Batter ies 1. Open the Bat tery/M emory card door on the side of the camer a by sliding the door to ward the bo ttom of the cam era . 2. Insert the bat teri es as indicated inside the door . 3. Clos e the Battery/Memory card door by pushing the door do wn and sliding the door to war d the top of the camera until the door latches .

The lens e xtends and the P ow er light to the left of the sw i tch turns on solid green . The HP logo also display s on the Image Display as the camer a powe rs up .
13 Getting Started 5 . Set the R egion After c hoosing a language , y ou ar e prom pted to choo se the continent wher e you liv e . The Lang uag e and Region settings determine the defa ults for the date for mat and the format of the vi deo signal for displa ying camer a images on a tele visi on (see TV Configuration on page 91 ).
14 HP Photosmart M415 User’s Manual 4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until the date and time are set corr ectly . 5. Press the button when you have entered the proper values for the date and time. A confirmation screen appears, asking if the correct date and time have been set.

37 Taking Pictures and Recording Video Clips If ther e is not enough contr ast or light in the f oc us regi on, try usin g Focu s Lo ck (s ee the next s ection , Usi ng F ocus L ock ), or simply tur n on more li ght, if that is possible . Usi n g F ocus Lock Fo cu s Lo c k allow s y ou to foc us on a sub ject that is n ot in the center of the pi ctur e , or to captur e action sho ts more qui ckl y by pre-foc using in the ar ea wher e the acti on w ill occur .
38 HP Photosmart M415 User’s Manual Using Z oom The mor e you z oom in on the subjec t of yo ur pictur e, the more small mo v ements of the camer a are magnif ied. T his is called camera shak e. So , espec ially at f ull telephoto z oom (3x), you mu st hold the camera s teady in or der to take a pic ture that is no t blurry .

In eac h shooting mode, the camer a selects the best set tings, such as the ISO speed , F-number (aperture), and shutter speed , optimi zing them for the partic ular scene or situati on.

Press the Timer button until Self- Timer or Self- Timer - 2 Shots appears in the Ima ge Display. The icon for the self-timer setting will a ppear in the Live View scr e en.

This setting pr oduces ve ry high quality images, w ith great er color accur acy , but uses the most memory .
49 Taking Pictures and Recording Video Clips The Image Quality setting not only aff ects the quality of the images but, as a r esult , also the number of images that can be stor ed either in the internal memory in the camera or on an optional memo r y card .
50 HP Photosmart M415 User’s Manual Ada pti ve L ighting This setting balances the relationship between br ight and dark ar eas in a pic ture , preserv ing gentle contra sts but reduc ing harsh contras ts. Dark ar eas in the pic ture ar e lightened, w hile brighter ar eas are left alone .

53 Taking Pictures and Recording Video Clips After you ha ve tak en a picture using either the Date Only or Dat e & Time setting, the date or date and time that is impr inted on the image ca nnot be re mov ed later . TIP : V erify that the date and time setting is cor rec t befor e usin g t hi s fea ture ( see Date & Time on page 8 9).
54 HP Photosmart M415 User’s Manual EV Compensation In difficult lighting conditions, you can use EV (Exposur e Va l u e ) Compensation to override the automatic exposure setting that the camera makes. EV Compen sation is useful in scenes that contain man y light obj ects (lik e a whit e object agains t a light bac kgr ound) or many dar k objects (lik e a black object against a dark back ground).
55 Taking Pictures and Recording Video Clips Whi te B al an ce Differ ent kinds of lighting co nditions cast differ ent colors. F or ex ample , sunlight is more blue , while indoor tungsten light is mor e ye llow . Scenes dominated by a single color may r equir e an adjustment of the white balance setting to help the camera r eproduce color s more acc urat ely and ensure that w hites appear white in the f inal image.
56 HP Photosmart M415 User’s Manual If the setting is anything o ther than the default Auto set ti ng, the icon f or the setting (in the pr ev ious table) w ill appear in the Live Vi ew screen . The new setting remains in effect until it is changed again or until the camer a is turned off .

85 Using the Setup Menu 6 Using the S etup Me nu The Setup Menu allow s you to adj ust a number of camer a settings, such as the camera sounds, date and time , and the confi gurati on of the U SB or TV connection. 1. To d i s p l a y t h e Setup Menu , f irst displa y any other menu (see Camer a Menus on page 26 ) and then use th e buttons to mov e to the menu tab for the Setup M enu .
