1 5 1 Getting Star ted With this version of the AirP or t software you can set up and manage an AirP or t network using Microsoft Windows , and wirelessly shar e a single Int ernet connection with multiple computers.
6 Chapter 1 Getting Started If you want to de sign an AirP or t network that provides Int ernet access to non-wirele ss computers via Ethernet, or take advantage of some of the base station ’ s more advanced f eatures , use this document to design and implement your netw ork.
Chapter 1 Getting Started 7 Use AirP or t to provide wireless Int ernet access and share a single In ternet connection among multiple computers in the follo wing ways: • Connect the AirP or t Ex treme Base Station or AirP or t Express to a DSL or cable modem.
8 Chapter 1 Getting Started AirP or t Admin Utility The AirP or t Admin Utility is a convenient wa y to make quick adjustments to y our base station configuration.
Chapter 1 Getting Started 9 T o use the base station in an air-handling space abo ve suspended ceilings , you must connect the Ethernet W AN port to an 802.3af-compliant PSE with a plenum-rated Ethernet cable. Y ou cannot use the AC pow er adapter to po wer a base station installed in an air-handling space.
10 Chapter 1 Getting Started Sharing Y our Comput er ’ s Internet C onnec tion If you hav e a wireless card installed in y our computer and you are connected to the Internet, you can share y our Internet connection with other computers. This is sometimes called using your computer as a software access point .
2 11 2 AirP or t Securit y This chapter pr ovide s an ov er view of the security features av ailable with the AirP or t Extreme Base Station and AirP or t Express.
12 Chapter 2 AirPort Security P assword Pr otection and Encr yption AirP or t uses password protection and encr yption to deliver a lev el of security comparable to traditional wired networks . Users can be required to enter a passw ord to log in to the AirP or t network.
Chapter 2 AirPort Security 13 LEAP Suppor t The Lightweight Extensible Authen tication Pr otocol (LEAP) is a security protocol used by Cisco access points t o dynamically assign a differen t WEP k ey to each user .
14 Chapter 2 AirPort Security WP A on the AirP or t Ex treme Base Station and AirP or t Express has two modes: “ WP A for enterprise ,” or WP A Ent erprise, which uses a RADIUS server for user authentication, and “ WP A for home/small office ,” or WP A Personal, which relies on the capabilities of TKIP without requiring a RADIUS server .

16 Chapter 3 AirPort Network Designs Using AirP or t Admin Utility Y ou can use AirPort Admin Utility to set up or modify an AirP or t Ex treme Base Station or AirP or t Express. Before using AirP or t Admin Utility , make sure y ou are connected to the network the base station create s.
Chapter 3 AirPort Network Designs 17 T o temporarily re set the base station password to public , press and hold the reset button for one second . T o reset the base station to the default settings , press and hold the reset button f or five full seconds.
18 Chapter 3 AirPort Network Designs 6 In the AirP or t pane, enter a base station name and password , a name f or your AirP or t network, and other information. (See the following sections for descriptions of the fields in the AirP or t pane.) Naming the Base Station Give the base station an easily identifiable name .

In the AirP ort pane of AirPort Admin Utility , click Wireless Securit y and choose one of the following options fr om the Wireless Securit y pop-up menu.

Chapter 3 AirPort Network Designs 21 Changing the Channel The “ channel” is the radio frequency over which your base station communicat es. If you use only one base station (for example , at home), you probably w on ’t need t o change the channel frequency .
22 Chapter 3 AirPort Network Designs Setting Wireless Options Y ou can set the multicast rate of the network, enable inter ference robustness , and adjust the transmitter power of the base station. T hese settings can reduce the range of the base station, and should not be modified without good reason.

The following sections tell you what to do , depending on how your base station connects to the Int ernet.
24 Chapter 3 AirPort Network Designs What Y ou Need for a DSL or C able Modem Connection What to D o T o set up a base station using AirP ort Admin Utility : 1 Make sure that your DSL or cable modem is connected to the Ethernet W AN ( ) por t on your AirP or t Ex treme Base Station or to the Ethernet port on your Airport Express.
Chapter 3 AirPort Network Designs 25 If you configure TCP/IP manually , choose Manually from the Configur e pop-up menu and enter y our own IP address inf ormation in the fields below the C onfigure pop-up menu. If you configure TCP/IP using DHCP , choose Using DHCP from the C onfigure pop-up menu.
26 Chapter 3 AirPort Network Designs 5 If you chose “PPP over Ethernet (PPP oE)” from the “Connect using” pop-up menu, enter the PPP oE settings your ser vice provider gav e you. Lea ve the Ser vice Name field blank unless your service provider requires a service name.
Chapter 3 AirPort Network Designs 27 • T o share a single Int ernet connection with wireless computers, make sure “Distribute IP addresses ” and “Share a single IP addre ss (using DHCP & NA T )” are selected.
28 Chapter 3 AirPort Network Designs 7 If you want to adjust optional adv anced settings, go to “Setting Adv anced Options” on page 39. If you are finished changing settings , click the Update button. Y our computer transfers the new settings to the base station.

46 Chapter 3 AirPort Network Designs Con trolling the Range of Y our AirP or t Network Y ou can also shor ten the range of your AirP or t network. This might be useful if you want to contr ol access to the netw ork by restricting the range to a single room, for example.
