Chapter 1 iPod nano Basics 7 Using iP od nano Contr ols The contr ols on iP od nano are easy to find and use. Press any butt on to turn on iP od nano. T he main menu appears. Use the Click Wheel and Center button to na vigate through onscreen menus , play songs , change settings, and get information.

If you like, you can turn off the Click Wheel sound through the headphones, the speaker , or both.

Y ou can see if it ’ s OK to disconnect iP od nano by looking at the iPod nano screen. Important: Don ’t disconnect iPod nano if you see the “Connected” or “Synchronizing ” messages.

For best re sults, the first time you use iP od nano, let it charge for about three hours or until the batt er y icon in the status area of the displa y shows that the battery is fully charged.

Chapter 1 iPod nano Basics 19 Understanding Batter y States When iP od nano isn ’t connected to a pow er source , a battery icon in the top-right corner of the iP od nano screen shows approximately how much char ge is left.
2 20 2 Setting Up iP od nano T o set up iP od nano, you use iT unes on your computer t o impor t, buy , and organize your music , video, podcasts, audiobooks, games, and other media conten t. Then you connect iP od nano to your c omputer and sync it to y our iT unes librar y .
Chapter 2 Setting Up iPod nano 21 Impor ting Music into Y our iT unes Library T o listen to music on iPod nano, you first need to get that music int o iT unes on your computer . There are thr ee ways of getting music and other a udio into iT unes: Â Purchase music , a udiobooks, and videos, or download podcasts online from the iT unes Store.
22 Chapter 2 Setting Up iPod nano  T o browse for podcasts , click the P odcasts link on the left side of the main page in the iT unes Store.  T o search the iT unes Store, type the name of an album, song , artist, or composer in the search field .
Chapter 2 Setting Up iPod nano 23 Y ou can also drag individual song files to iT unes. Note: Using iT unes for Windows, you can convert nonprotected WMA files to AAC or MP3 format. This can be useful if you ha ve a library of music encoded in WMA f ormat.
24 Chapter 2 Setting Up iPod nano Adding L yrics Y ou can enter song lyrics in plain text format into iT unes so that you can view the song lyrics on iP od nano while the song is playing . T o enter lyrics into i T unes: 1 Select a song and choose File > Get Info .

Adding a song to a pla ylist or later removing it doesn ’t remov e it from your librar y . T o create a playlist in iT unes: 1 Click the Add ( + ) button or choose F ile > New Playlist.
26 Chapter 2 Setting Up iPod nano 4 T o change the maximum number of songs included in the playlist, choose a number from the pop-up menu. 5 T o save the playlist, click Save Pla ylist. Y ou can add and remov e items from a sav ed Genius playlist. Y ou can also click Refresh to create a new playlist based on the same original song.
Chapter 2 Setting Up iPod nano 27 Con ver ting Y our Own Videos to W ork with iP od nano Y ou can view other video files on iPod nano, such as videos you create in iMovie on a Mac or videos you download from the Int ernet. Impor t the video into iT unes, convert it for use with iP od nano, if nec essary , and then add it to iPod nano.
28 Chapter 2 Setting Up iPod nano Y ou can set iT unes to add music to iP od nano in three way s: Â Sync all songs and playlists: When you connect iP od nano, it ’ s automatically updated to match the songs and other items in y our iT unes librar y .
Chapter 2 Setting Up iPod nano 29 3 Select the playlists you want. 4 T o include music videos and display album ar twork, select those options. 5 Click Apply . If “Sync only checked songs and videos” is selected in the Summar y pane, iT unes syncs only items that are checked.
30 Chapter 2 Setting Up iPod nano T o add songs to or remove songs fr om a playlist on iP od nano: m Drag a song to a playlist on iP od nano to add the song. Select a song in a playlist and press the Delete key on your keyboard to delete the song . If you set iT unes to manage music manually , you can reset it lat er to sync automatically .

Y ou can set iT unes to sync all movies and T V shows to iP od nano automatically when you connect iP od nano, or you can set iT unes to sync only selected playlists.
32 Chapter 2 Setting Up iPod nano Important: The first time you connect iP od nano to a differ ent computer and ha ve the automatic sync option set, a message asks if you want to sync songs and videos automatically .

36 Chapter 3 Listening to Music Viewing Album Ar twork on iP od nano By default, iT unes displays album artwork on iP od nano. If the ar twork is av ailable, you ’ll see it on iP od nano in Cov er Flow , in the album list , and when you play music fr om the album.
Chapter 3 Listening to Music 37 T o browse songs by artist: 1 F rom the Now Playing scr een, press and hold the C enter button until a menu appears . 2 Choose Browse Artist, and then press the Center butt on. Y ou see all the songs by that ar tist that are on iP od nano.
38 Chapter 3 Listening to Music Using Genius on iP od nano When iP od nano isn ’t connected to your comput er , Genius can still automatically create instant playlists of songs that go great t ogether . T o use G enius, you need to set up Genius in the iT unes Store , and then sync iP od nano to iT unes.
Chapter 3 Listening to Music 39 Setting iP od nano to Shuffle Songs Y ou can set i P od nano to play songs, albums, or your entire library in random order . T o set iPod n ano to shuffle and play all y our songs: m Choose Shuffle Songs from the iP od nano main menu.
40 Chapter 3 Listening to Music T o disable shak ing: m Choose Settings > Playback > Shake and select O ff . T o turn shak ing on again, choose Settings > Playback > Shake, and then select On. Shaking is also disabled when the Hold switch is in the HOLD position, or if the display is off .

7 64 7 Tips and T rouble shooting Most problems with iP od nano can be solved quickly by follo wing the advice in this chapter . General Suggestions Most problems with iP od nano can be solved by resetting it. First, make sure iP od nano is charged . T o reset iP od nano: 1 T o ggle the Hold switch on and off (slide it to HOLD and then back again).
