1 Introduction Accton’s Cheetah Wireless-3501C USB Adapter (WN3501C) is an 1 1 Mbp s wireless network adapter that seamlessl y integrates with existing Ethernet networks to support applications suc h as mobile users or temporary conferences. The adapter is full y compliant wit h 2.

3 Hardware Description Accton’s Cheetah Wireless-3501C USB Adapter supports an 1 1 Mbps hal f-duplex connection to Ethernet networks. This ada pter is fully compliant wi th 2.4 GHz DSSS CSMA/CA wireless networking as d efined in IEEE 802.1 1b. It can be inst alled in any notebook or desktop with a USB port.

5 Driver Installation The CD-ROM that comes with the package contai ns the software/drivers fo r the Cheetah Wireless-3501C USB Adapter. New or updat ed drivers can be downloaded from Accton’s web site at: http://www.acctontech.com . For installa tion in Windows 95/98/Me/2000 see the following section.

Double-click Protocol and add the network protocols you wish to use. If you inst all TCP/IP , be sure to set the ap propriate Gateway , DNS Server , and Domain for y our network.

Setting Wireless Prope rties 11 10. The Beacon Period (20-1000 k µ s) opti on allows the wireless devices t o maintain contact with each other. The beacon signal may also carry power-ma nagement information.

However, if you are co nnecting to a network via an access point , the adapter will aut omatically set the channel to t he same as that used by the access point.
Setting Wireless Prope rties 13 12. Wired Equivalent Pri vacy (WEP) is implemented in the adapter t o prevent unauthorized access. Fo r more secure data transmissions, set encryption to 128-bit or 64-bit. The 128-bit setti ng gives a higher level of security.
Cheetah Wireless-3501C USB Adapter 14 13. Set the ESSID identi fier to the same as th at used by the ad hoc workgroup or access point to which you want to con nect. (The Accton access point defa ult is WLAN.) If you will be roaming among multiple access points with diff erent BSS IDs, a value of ANY will allow connection to any ESSID.
Setting Wireless Prope rties 15 15. Enable the International Roaming for mobile workers roaming in an infrastruc ture network. More than one access point may be conf igured with the same SSID to create an Extended Service Set (ESS). See “Roaming Wireless PCs” on page 34 for details.

Cheetah Wireless-3501C USB Adapter 18 18. Rate is the data transmissio n/reception rate setting. It can be set to Auto, 1 Mbps, 2 Mbps, 5.5 Mbps, or 11 Mbps. Usually this should be set to Auto. In a radio frequency hostile envi ronment, a lower rate can provide more stab le transmission qual ity.
Setting Wireless Prope rties 19 19. The access point sends Request to Se nd (RTS) frames to a particular receiving station to negoti ate the sending of a data frame. After recei ving an RTS frame, the station sends a CTS (Clear to Send) frame to acknowledge the right of the sending station to send data fra mes.
Cheetah Wireless-3501C USB Adapter 20 20. The WEP encryption implemented in Accton’s Wireless USB adapter is base d on the RC4 encryption algorithm. The secu rity keys are four 10 digit keys fo r the 64-bit WEP setting, and one 26-di git key for the 128-bit WEP setting.

Cheetah Wireless-3501C USB Adapter 22 Windows XP Driver Installation 1. Insert the instal lation CD into your PC’s CD-ROM drive. 2. Plug the Cheetah Wireless-35 01C USB Adapter into your PC’s USB port. 3. Windows XP will automaticall y detect the new hardware and prompt you to install the driver.
Windows XP Driver Installation 23 5. Check “Don’t search. I will choose the driv er to install” and click Next. 6. Click Have Disk, and th e Install From Disk screen will open. 7. Type E:driver usbsetup (assuming your CD drive is E:) and cli ck OK.

On the Hardware Insta llation screen click Contin ue Anyway. 9. After the software has been install ed, click Finish to complete the driver in stallation.

Using the Wireless USB Utility in Windows 95, 98, Me, 2000, and XP 27 Channel – If you are setting up an ad hoc wireless LAN (see p age 32), set the channel number to the same radio channel as that used by the other wireless client s in your group.

Network Topologi es 33 Infrastructure Wireless LAN The WN3501C can also provide access to a wi red LAN for wireless workst ations. An integrated wired and wireless LAN is cal led an Infrastructure configuratio n. A Basic Service Set (BSS) consist s of a group of wireless PC users, and an access point that is directly connec ted to the wired LAN.

35 Troubleshooting USB Adapter Installation Problems If your computer cannot find t he Cheetah Wireless-3501 C USB Adapter or the network driver does not inst all correctly , check the following items: • Make sure the adapter is connected t o the USB port.
