1 Chapter 1 Introduction Overview The KH1508i / KH1516i KVM Switches are control un its that allow access to multiple computers from a single KVM (keyboard, monitor, and m ouse) console. A single KH150 8i / KH1516i can control up to 8 / 16 comp uters.
KH1508i / KH1516i User Manual 2 For local access, the KH1508i / KH151 6i supports resolutions of u p to 1600 x 1200, as well as 1280 x 1024 @ 75Hz for an extend ed distance of up to 40 m . For remote access, the switches support up to 1280 x 1024 @ 75Hz.

9 Chapter 2 Hardware Setup Overview For convenience and flexibili ty that allows mixing the PS/ 2, USB, and serial device interfaces, as well as multiple platforms, the KH1508i / KH1516i's design utilizes KVM A dapter Cables (CPU Mod ules), that serve as intermediaries between the switch and the connected devices (refer to the installation diagram on page 13).
KH1508i / KH1516i User Manual 10 St acking and Rack Mounting The KH1508i / K H1516i can be stacked o n the desktop or rack mounted at the front or rear of the rack. The following sections take you through the procedures for each method. St acking The KH1508i / KH1516i can be placed on any appropriate level surface that can safely support its weight plus the we ight of its attached cables.
Chapter 2. Hardware Setup 11 Rack Mounting The KH1508i / KH1516i can be mou nted in a 19" (1U) racks. The mounting brackets can screw into either the front or the back of the unit so that it can attach to the front or the back of the rack.

Chapter 2. Hardware Setup 15 Daisy Chaining Up to 15 additional KH1508 / KH1516 KV M switches can be daisy chained down from the KH1508i or KH1516i. As many as 256 com put ers can be controlled from a single cons ole in a complete installation. Note: Aten ACS1208 / ACS1216 switch es can also be installed on a KH1508i / KH1516i daisy chain.

W ait for the unit to ascertain its Station ID and display it on the Station ID LED. (The Station ID for the First S tage unit is 01, the ID for the Second Stage unit is 02, the ID for the Third Stage unit is 03, etc.

KH1508i / KH1516i User Manual 18 Hot Plugging The KH1508i / K H1516i supports h ot plugging – compo nents can be removed and added back into the inst allation by unplugging and replu gging their cables from their ports without the need to shut the unit down.

21 Chapter 4 Local Console Operation Overview When setting up your KH1508i / KH1516 i installation for the first time, we recommend doing it from the local console. Local console operation offers a menu driven On Screen Display (OSD) to handle computer control and switching op erations.
KH1508i / KH1516i User Manual 22 The OSD Main Screen After you successfully log in, a screen similar to the one below appears: Note: 1. The screen depicts the Administra tor's Main Screen. The User Main Screen does not show the F4 or F6 function since it is reserved for the Administrator and can't be accessed by ordinary Users.
Chapter 4. Local Console Operation 23 OSD Navigation T o dismiss the menu, and d eactivate the OSD, Click the X at the upper right corner of the OSD W indow; or press [Esc] . T o Logout, Click F8 or the Z Z Z symbol at the top of the Main Screen, or press [F8] .
KH1508i / KH1516i User Manual 24 OSD Functions OSD functions are used to configure and control the OSD. For example, rapidly switching to any port; scanning only selected port s; limiting the list of ports you wish to view; designating a port as a Quick View Port; managing port names; or making OSD setting adjust ments.
Chapter 4. Local Console Operation 25 F2 LIST This function le ts you broaden or narr ow the scope of which ports th e OSD displays (lists) on the Main OSD Sc reen. Many of the O SD functions only operate on the computers that are listed on the Main OSD Screen.
KH1508i / KH1516i User Manual 26 F3 SET This function allows the Administrato r and each User to set up their own working environment. A separate profile for each is stored by the OSD and is activated accord ing to the Username that is provided during Login.

When activated, the b eeper sounds whenever a Port is changed, when activating t he Auto Scan function (see F7 SCAN , page 32), or an invalid entry is made on an OSD menu.
Chapter 4. Local Console Operation 29 F4 ADM F4 is an Admini strator only fun ction. It allo ws the Administrator t o configure and control the overall operation of the OSD. To change a setting use th e Up and Down Arrow Keys to move the highligh t bar to it then press [E nter] .
KH1508i / KH1516i User Manual 30 (Continued from previous page.) Setting Function SET OPERA TING SYSTEM S pecifies the operating plat form of the computer att ached to each port. For each port, press the [Sp acebar] to cycle through the choices (PC, Mac, Sun, and Other).
Chapter 4. Local Console Operation 31 F5 SKP This function enables you to easily skip backw ard or forward, switching the console focus from the cu rrently active KVM Port to the previous or next available one. The selection of computers to be av ailable for Skip Mode switching is made with the Scan/Skip Mode setting under the F3 SET function (see page 26).
KH1508i / KH1516i User Manual 32 F6 IP This function allow s you to select whether t o assign the KH1508i / KH1516i’s IP address dynamically (DHCP), or to give it a fixed IP address. Press [Enter] to toggle between the choices. If you toggle DHCP Enable to Off, specify the IP, Mask, and Gateway in the appropriate fields.
Chapter 4. Local Console Operation 33 F8 LOUT Pressing [F8] logs you out of OSD con tro l of the computers, and blanks the Console screen. This is different from simply pressing [Esc] when you are at the Main Screen to deactivate the OSD. With this function yo u must log in all over again to regain access to the OSD, whereas with [Es c] , all you have to do to reenter the OSD is tap the OSD Hotkey.
KH1508i / KH1516i User Manual 34 Keyboard Port Operation Overview In addition to the OSD, the KH1508i / KH151 6i also supp orts port control directly from t he keyboard with the use of hotkey combinations. Hotkey port con trol allows you to prov ide KVM focus to a particular computer directly from the keyboard .
Chapter 4. Local Console Operation 35 (Continued from previous page.) When Hotk ey Mode i s active: The Caps Lock, and Scroll Lock LE Ds flash in succession to indicate Hotkey Mode is active. They stop flashing and revert to normal status when you exit H otkey Mode.
KH1508i / KH1516i User Manual 36 Auto Scanning Auto Scan automatically switches among all the active Computer Ports that are accessible to the currently logged on User at regular intervals , so that he can monitor their activity automatically. (See SCAN/SKIP MODE of the OSD F3 SET function, page 26 for informat ion regarding accessible ports).
Chapter 4. Local Console Operation 37 Invoking Auto Scan To start Auto Scanning, key in the fol low ing Hotkey combination: 1. Invoke Hotkey Mode (see page 34). 2. Press [A] . After you press A , you automatically exit Hotkey Mode, and enter Auto Scan Mode, and Auto Scanning begins.
KH1508i / KH1516i User Manual 38 Skip Mode This feature allows you to switch between computers in o rder to monitor t hem manually. You can dwel l on a particular port for as long or as lit tle as you like - as opposed to Auto Scanning, whic h automatically switches after a fixed interval.
Chapter 4. Local Console Operation 39 Hotkey Beeper Control The Beeper (see ACTIVATE BEEPER , page 28) can be Hot key toggled On and Off. When the beeper is set to On , the KH1508i / KH1516i beeps when it switches ports. To toggle the Beeper, key in th e followin g Hotkey combination: 1.

Chapter 5. Browser Login 57 Private Certificate When logging in over a secure (SSL) connection, a signed certificate is used to verify that the user is logging in to th e intended site. For enhanced security, the Private Certificate section allows you to use your ow n private encryption key and signed certificate, rather th an the default ATEN certificate.

Administration and Configuration 69 Service Configuration The Service Configuration di alog is composed of two main panels: Access Port and Log Server: Access Port As a security measure, if a firewall is being used, the Admi nistrator can specify the port numbers that the firewall will allow, and set the firewall accordingly.
KH1508i / KH1516i User Manual 70 Log Server Important transactions that occur on the KH1508i / KH1 516i, such as logins and internal status messag es, are kept in an automatically generated log file. Specify the MAC address and a port nu mber for the comput er that the Log Server resides on in this panel.

KH1508i / KH1516i User Manual 78 Security The Security page controls access to the KH 1508 i / KH1516i. IP and MAC Filtering If any filters have been configured, th ey appear in the IP Filter and/ or MAC Filter list boxes. IP and MAC Filters control access to the KH1508i / KH1516i based on the IP and/or MAC addresses of the co mputers attempting to connect.

T o filter a single IP address, key in the same address in both the From and T o fields. T o filter a continuous range of IP addresses, key in the start of the range in the From field; key in the end of the range in the T o field.
