1 Chapter 1 Introduction Overview The KH1508 / KH1516 KVM Sw itches are control units that allow access to multiple computers from a single KVM (keyboard, monitor, and m ouse) console. A single KH1508 / KH1516 can control up to 8 / 16 computers.

9 Chapter 2 Hardware Setup Overview For convenience and flexibili ty that allows mixing the PS/ 2, USB, and serial device interfaces, as well as multiple platforms, the KH1508 / KH1516's design utilizes KVM Adapter Cabl es (CPU Modules), that serve as intermediaries between the switch and the connected de vices (refer to the installatio n diagram on page 13).
KH1508 / KH1516 User Manual 10 St acking and Rack Mounting The KH1508 / KH1516 can be st acked on th e desktop or rack mounted at the front or rear of the rack. The following sections take you through the procedures for each method. St acking The KH1508 / KH1516 can be placed on any appro priate level surface that can safely support its weight plus the wei ght of its attached cables.

21 Chapter 4 OSD Operation OSD Overview The On Screen Display (OSD) is a menu d riven method to handle computer control and switchi ng operations. All pr ocedures start from the OSD Main Screen. To pop up the Main Screen, tap [Scroll Lock] twic e.

The User Main Screen does not show the F4 and F6 functions, since these are reserved for the Administrator and can't be accessed by ordinary Users.

For example, you can rapidly switch to any port, scan selected ports only , limit the list you wish to view, designate a port as a Quick View Port, create or edit a port name, or make OSD setting adjustments.
Chapter 4. OSD Operation 25 F2 LIST This function le ts you broaden or narr ow the scope of which ports th e OSD displays (lists) on the Main Screen. Many of the OSD func tions only operate on the computers currently selected for Listing on the Main Screen with this function.
KH1508 / KH1516 User Manual 26 F3 SET This function allows the Administrator an d each User to set up an individual working environment. A separate profile for each is stored by the OSD and is activated according to the Username prov ided during Login.
Chapter 4. OSD Operation 27 (Continued from previous page.) Setting Function PORT ID DISPLA Y MODE Selects how the Port ID is displayed: the Port Number alone ( PORT NUMBER ); the Port Name alone ( PORT NAME ); or the Por t Number plus the Port Name ( PORT NUMBER + PORT NAME ).
KH1508 / KH1516 User Manual 28 F4 ADM F4 is an Administrator only fun ction. It allows the A dministrator to con figure and control the overall oper ation of the OSD. To change a setting Double Click it; or use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to m ove th e highlight bar to it, th en press [Enter].

T o select/deselect a port as a Qu ick V iew Port, use the Navigation Keys to move the highlight bar to it , then press the [S pacebar].

KH1508 / KH1516 User Manual 32 F5 SKP This function enables you to easily skip backward or forw ard, switching the console focus from the cu rrently active KVM Port to the previous or next available one. The selection of comp uters to be available for Skip M ode switching is made with the Scan/Skip Mode setting und er the F3 SET function (see page 27).
Chapter 4. OSD Operation 33 F6 BRC F6 is an Administrator only function. When this function is in effect, commands sent from the console are br oadcast to all available computers on the installation. This function is parti cularly useful for operatio ns that need to be performed on multiple computers, such as performing a system wid e shutdown, installing or upgrading software, etc.
KH1508 / KH1516 User Manual 34 F7 SCAN This function automatically switches am ong the available computers at regular intervals so that you can monito r thei r activity without having to take the trouble of switching manu ally. The selection of computers to be included for Auto Scanning is made wit h the Scan/Skip Mode setting under the F3 S ET function (see pa ge 27).
Chapter 4. OSD Operation 35 F8 LOUT Clicking the F8 field, or pressing [F8], lo gs y ou out of the OSD and blanks the Console screen. This is different from simply deactivatin g the OSD when you are at the Main Screen by pressing [Esc]. With this function you must log in all over again to regain access to the OSD, whereas with [Esc], all you have to do to reenter the OSD is tap the OSD Hotkey.

37 Chapter 5 Keyboard Operation Keyboard Port Control Keyboard port control allows you to provi de KVM focus to a particular computer using hotkey combinations from th e keyboard. The KH1508 / KH1516 provides the follow ing ho tkey port control features: Selecting the Active Port Auto Scanning Skip Mode Switch in g Invoking Hotkey Mode All hotkey operations begin by invoking Hotkey Mode .
KH1508 / KH1516 User Manual 38 Selecting the Active Port Each Computer Port is assigned a Port ID (see Port ID Numbering , page 19). You can directly access an y computer on the inst allation with a hotkey combination that specifies th e Port ID of the Computer Port that the computer is connected to.
Chapter 5. Keyboard Operation 39 Invoking Auto Scan To start Auto Scanning, key in the fol low ing hotkey combination: 1. Invoke Hotkey Mode (see page 37). 2. Press [A] . After you press A , you automatically exit Hotkey Mode, and enter Auto Scan Mode, and Auto Scanning begins.
KH1508 / KH1516 User Manual 40 Skip Mode This feature allows you to switch between computers in o rder to monitor t hem manually. You can dwel l on a particular port for as long or as lit tle as you like - as opposed to Auto Scanning, whic h automatically switches after a fixed interval.
Chapter 5. Keyboard Operation 41 Hotkey Beeper Control The Beeper (see ACTIVATE BEEPER , page 29) can be hotkey to ggled On and Off. To toggle the Beep er, key in the fo llowing hotkey co mbination: 1. Invoke Hotkey Mode (see page 37). 2. Press [B] After you press B , the Beeper toggles On or Off.

43 Chapter 6 Keyboard Emulation Mac Keyboard The PC compatible (101/104 key) keyboard can emu late the functions of the Mac keyboard. The emulation mappings are listed in the table below. Note: When using key combinations, press and release the first key (Ctrl), then press and release the activation key .
KH1508 / KH1516 User Manual 44 Sun Keyboard The PC compatible (101/104 key) keyboard can emul ate the fu ncti ons of the Sun keyboard when t he Control key [Ctrl] is used in conjunction with other keys. The corresponding function s are shown in the table below.

If you enabled Check Firmwar e V ersion , the Utility compares the device's firmware level with that of the upg rade files. If it finds that the device's version is higher than the upgrade version, it brings up a dialog box informing you of t he situation and gives you the o ption to Continue or Cancel: .

Firmware Upgrade 49 Upgrade Succeede d: After the upgrade has completed, a screen appears to inform you that the procedure was successful: Click Finish to close the Firmwa re Upgrade Utility. Upgrade Fail ed: If the upgrade failed to complete succe ssfully a dialog box appears asking if you want to retry.

When you invoke Firmware Upgrade Mo de (see FIRMWARE UPGRADE , page 31), but decide not to proceed with the upgrade.
