8 IN ST AL LA TIO N INST ALLIN G THE BACKUP BA TTER Y If the AC po wer fails or you unpl ug the TAD-1010 , a 9V b ackup battery (not supplied) save s the mess ages and the settings for the day, time, and security code. We reco mmend you use an alka- line battery, such as Radio Shack Cat.
9 SELECTI N G A LOCA TION You can set the TAD-1010’s bas e on a flat surface (such as a desktop or coun- tertop), or moun t it on a wall plate or di - rectly on the wall. The base’s locat ion affec ts the phone’s range. If you h ave a choice of sev eral locat ions, tr y each to see which one provides the best perfor- mance.
10 To prepare the bracket for moun ting, twist off the tabs attached to the center of the bracket and press the m securely into the holes on the narrow en d of the bracket. Moun t i ng on a W al l Pla t e 1. Plug one end of the supplied 7-inch modular cord into the TO TEL.
11 7. For the be st reception, adjust the base ’s antenna s o it s tands straight up. Note : If you want to remove the supplied bracket af ter atta ching it, simpl y press in the tab on eac h side of the bracket and lift the brack et away from the base.
12 4. Insert the tabs on the suppl ied mounting bracke t into the s lots on the base’s bottom , then press the bracket down un til it snaps in to place.
13 TELEP H ONE P REP ARA TION IN ST ALLING T HE HANDSET BA T TER Y P ACK To insta ll t h e supplie d rechargeable battery pack, place i t on t he batt ery compartm ent tra cks, th en sli d e it up (t o- ward t he antenna) u ntil it locks in pl ace. Note: Y ou must charge a new battery pack at least 24 ho urs before you us e it the first time.
14 CHARGING T HE HANDSET BATTERY PACK You m ust charge the ba ttery pack at least 24 ho urs b efore you use t he TAD- 1010 the first time or when you replace the ba ttery pack . T o c ha rge or rec harge the battery pack, simply place t he hand- set on the cradle.
15 • About onc e a mont h, fully dis- charge the battery pack. O therwise, it w ill lose its abilit y to full y recharge , and you m igh t have to recharge and replac e it more of ten. T o fully discharge the ba t tery pack, keep the handset o f f the cradle until PRIV ACY/LOW BA T T t urns o n.

17 TELEP HONE OPERA TI ON Importa nt : If you move the hands et out- side the base’s range, the handset will not op erate properly a nd a cal l in progre ss might be disconnected (see “Troubleshoo ting” on Page 32).
18 USING REDIAL To redial the l ast num ber di aled, lift the handset, press TA L K to get a dial ton e, then press REDIAL . The phone a uto- matically di als the last nu mber dia led. USING PRIV AC Y To talk to som eone else in t he roo m without the person on the other end of the phone hearing y o ur c o nversation, press PRIV ACY .
19 Note: If you do not have a ny spec ial phone se rvices, pressing FLASH might discon nect th e current ca ll. USING TONE SER VICES ON A PULSE LINE If y ou hav e pul se serv ice, y ou c an tem - pora rily switch t o send ing tone signal s for ban king services or com puter trans- actions.
20 MEMORY O PERATION You can st ore up to 10 p hone numbers in the TA D-1010’s m em ory, then qui ckly dial them . Note: E ach ph one num ber can be up to 16 digits long. Storin g a Number in Memory 1. Press OFF on the hands et. 2. Press PROG . T he T ALK indicator flashes.
21 Stor ing a Pau se in Mem ory In some telephone systems, you must dial an acces s code ( 9 , for example ) and wa it f or a second dial tone b efore you can dial an out side number. You can store the access code with the phone num ber. Howev er, you m ust also s tore a pa use a fter the access code .
22 T AD S ETUP AND BASIC OPERA TION SETTI NG THE N UMBER OF RING S The TAD is preset to sound t wo rings before it answers the first call . Follow these steps to cha nge the num ber of rings ( t wo rings, four rings , or toll- saver) . Note: If you plan to chec k your mess ag- es by long dist a nce, set the number of ri n g s to to ll- s a v e r .
23 SETTING THE DAY AND TIM E 1. Press and hold SETUP unt il the time and flashi ng day icon appear . 2. Press REPEA T or SKIP to s c ro ll to the desired day . 3. Press STOP or wait 3 sec onds to exit the s etup sequence. Or , pres s SETUP a gain to set t he hour.
24 SELECTI NG AN ANNOUNCEMENT The TAD has th ree announ cement op- tions: 1, 2, a nd OGM . • Announcem ent 1 l ets you record a personal anno unc ement, a nd the caller is able to l eav e a message up to 5 minut es lo ng.
25 • Do not tell call ers that you are not home. I nstead, say that you can not come to the phone right now . • I f you set the T A D to receive mes- sage s for up to f our dif ferent users, your outgoing announcem ent shou ld expl ain how t o leave a m es - sage for a part icular person.
26 SETTI NG THE T AD TO ANSWER CALLS To tu rn th e TA D o n a nd se t i t to an sw er calls, press ON/ OF F . The ON/OFF indi- cator li g hts when the TAD is on. Notes: • If fl a s he s while the AC adapter is properly conne cted, replace the backup battery .
27 PLA YING MESS A GES W hen a new me ssage or me mo is re- corded , flashe s. If a m ess age or mem o i s in a spec ific mai lbox, the m ail - box number flas hes al so. 1. Press MAILBOX until the desired mail box number lights. The mes- sage counter indicates the numbe r of mes sages in the current mai lbox.
28 3. Press SKIP to skip to the n e xt m es- sage. P ress REPEA T twice to play the previo us m essage. 4. Press STOP a t any time to exit m e s- sage playback. ADJUSTING TH E T AD’S VOLUM E You can a djust the volume of the TAD by repe atedly press ing VOLUME during messag e playback and call scr eening.
29 REMOTE OPERA TION USING THE TO LL-SA VER W hen you call the TAD w ith the ring type set to toll- saver, it an swers aft e r about two rings if you have new m es- sage s (ones you hav e not played). If there a re no new m essages, the T AD waits for a bout f our rings bef ore it an - swers.
30 Note: If you ent er the correct remo te operation security code, but the TAD does not accept it, t he code might have reset to the default (99) because of a power failure.
31 Rem ote Oper ation Co mmands Use these keys on th e cordless handset or on a touc h-tone phone or pocket tone di- aler to operat e t he T AD when you are away f rom the base. T he T AD plays a series of voice prompts to guide you through remote operation comm ands.
32 T ROUBLES HOOTING We do not expect you to have any problem s with your TAD-101 0, b ut if you do, try these sugges tions.
