8 Importa nt!: V erify the handset batter y is properly installed before connecting the tra vel adapter . If the batter y is not properly installed and the tra vel adapter is connected, the handset continuously pow er c ycles and prevents proper operation.

V olume keys allow you to adjust t he Ring volume in standby mode (with t he phone open) or adjust t he Speake r volume duri ng a call. W hen receiv ing an incoming call , if you press the volume k ey , you ca n mute the ring tone.
16 Icons This li st ident ifies the sy mbols yo u see on your phon e display screen: Shows the received signal strength. The greater the number of bars, the stronger the signal. Show s the level of your ba tt er y . The more bars yo u see, the more power remains.
Understandi ng Y our Phone 17 Bac klight A backli ght il lumina tes the internal display and the keyp ad. When you press any key , the bac klight comes on. It goes off when no keys are pressed within a given period of time, depending on the setti ng in the Backlight menu.
18 Dis p l ay Y our phone h a s a display on the front of the phone. Th e display ind icates when you receive a n incoming cal l or messa ge and also displays any ala rms for the specifi ed time. The display shows the curre nt time on a digital c l ock.

20 Ans wering a Call When you receive an inco ming call from a number st ored in the Cont act Li st, the phone rings and displays th e in coming call ima ge (if stored in your Contact List). The ca ller’ s phone num ber or name displays , if it is st ored in your Contact List .
Call Functions 21 The foll o wing call record options are available: All Calls This menu lets you view the 60 most rece nt calls you received , dialed, and missed. The name or num ber , if already s t ored in your Contact List, displays with the number of occurrences for each number .

Call Functions 25 Selecting Options T o view the various functions an d option s a vailable, you must select t he one you want by: 1. Pressing the a ppropriate soft key . 2. Selec ting the displayed func tion or the hig hlighted opt ion, press the Sele ct soft key or .
26 Exa mpl e: Y ou wish to speak to a person in the room but do not want the person on the phone to hear . T o switc h the mi crophone off temporari ly: 䊳 Press Mute ( ). The other person can no lo nger hear you. The Mute icon ( ) displays in the call bo x.

28 Sear c hing for a Number in the Contact List Y ou can search for a number in the Con tact List during a call. 1. Press the Options ➔ Contacts . The Contact List displays. 2. Use the Up or Down Navig a tion key to highlight th e contact y o u desi re.
Call Functions 29 3-W ay Calling (Multi-P ar ty Calling) The 3-W ay or Multi-P arty feature allo ws yo u to answer a seri es of inco ming calls and pl ace them on hold. If this service is supported by the network, and the SIM has the feature enabled, all calls can be j oined to gether .

Entering T ext 31 Section 5: Entering T e xt This section outlines how to select the desired text input mo de when entering chara cte rs into your phon e. This section also de scribes how to use the T9 predictive text system to reduce th e number of key stro kes associated wi th entering text.
32 Using T9 Mo de T9 is a predictiv e text input mode that allo ws you to key in an y character using single keystrokes. This text input mode is bas ed on a built-in dictionar y . T o enter a word in T9 mode: 1. When you are in T9 mode, pres s any one of the letter keys to enter a word.
Entering T ext 33 Using ABC Mode T o use ABC mode, use th e lette r keys to enter your text. 1. Press t he ke y labe led wi th the let te r you wa nt: • Onc e for the firs t lett er , tw ic e for th e seco nd lett er , and s o o n. 2. Selec t the ot her letters in the same way .
34 Using Symbo l Mode Symbol mode enables you to insert symbols and punctu a tion marks into text. T o display symbols options, p ress and hold the key until the symb ols display on the screen, or press the Right soft key and select Symbol. 1. T o select a symbol, press the corres ponding number key .

Messages 43 Draft s This message box stores messages that you may want to edit or send at a later tim e. When y ou enter this menu, the l ist of messages in the box dis plays. 1. In Idle mode, pres s Menu ➔ Mes sages ➔ Drafts . The Message Box for Drafts displays.
44 Tip : Press the Options soft key while reading a message to select alterna te options. Sent Bo x This message box st ores unsent messages. When you enter this menu, t he list of me ssages in the Sent Box displays with the recipients’ phone numbers or name s, if a vaila ble i n your Pho nebook.

52 Dialing a Num ber from the Contact List Once you store phon e numbers in the Co n tact List, you can dial them easily and quickl y . Not e: Select Contact List in the Contacts menu to search for the entry by name. For more information, refer to “Finding a Contact List Entry” on page 50.
Managing Y our Contacts 53 Editing a Caller Group 1. In Idle mode, press Menu ➔ Contacts ➔ Group and press the Select soft key or the key . 2. In the group list, highli ght a group and press the Options soft key . 3. Highlight Edit and press the Select soft key or the key .
54 Speed Dialing Once you store phone numb er s from your Phonebo ok list , you can set up to 8 speed dial e ntrie s and then ea sily dial them whenever you want, by pressin g the associa ted numeric key . 䊳 In Idle mode, to speed di al th e numbers assi gned to keys (2 to 9), press and hold the approp riate key .
Managing Y our Contacts 55 FDN Contacts Fi xed Dial Numb er (FDN) m ode , if sup ported by your SIM card, allows you to restrict your outgo ing calls to a limi ted set of phone numbers. When this fea ture is enabl ed, you can mak e calls only to phone numbers stored in the FDN li st on the SIM c ard.
56 • Own Numb er : provides the number for your phone. • Copy All to : allows you to choose to co py all contacts to your phone or to you r SIM card.
