Chapter 1 Introduction 1-1 Overview The 7045A-C3/7045A-CT is a high-end workstation comprised of two main subsys- tems: the SC743TQ-865-SQ tower/4U server chassis and the X7DCA-3/X7DCA-i dual Intel Xeon processor serverboard.

Chapter 2: Server Installation 2-1 Chapter 2 Server Installation 2-1 Overview This chapter provides a quick setup checklist to get your SuperWorkstation 7045A- C3/7045A-CT up and running. Following these steps in the order given should en- able you to have the system operational within a minimum amount of time.
2-2 S uper W orkstation 7045A-C3/7045A-CT User's Manual Choosing a Setup Location Leave enough clearance in front of the rack to enable you to open the front door completely (~25 inches) and approximately 30 inches of clearance in the back of the rack to allow for suffi cient airfl ow and ease in servicing.
Chapter 2: Server Installation 2-3 Allow the hot plug SAS/SA T A drives and power supply modules to cool before touching them. Always keep the rack's front door and all panels and components on the servers closed when not servicing to maintain proper cooling.

Chapter 2: Server Installation 2-5 Installing the Chassis Rails Y ou will need to remove the top cover and the feet to add rack rails to the chassis. First, remove the top and right covers (top and left covers when standing as a tower chassis) by fi rst removing the screws that secure them to the chassis.

Chapter 3: System Interface 3-1 Chapter 3 System Interface 3-1 Overview The control panel on the 7045A-C3/7045A-CT has several LEDs and two buttons. There are also two LEDs on each SAS/SA T A drive carrier . These LEDs keep you constantly informed of the overall status of the system and the activity and health of specifi c components.

Chapter 4: System Safety 4-3 4-3 ESD Precautions Electrostatic discharge (ESD) is generated by two objects with different electrical charges coming into contact with each other . An electrical discharge is created to neutralize this difference, which can damage electronic com ponents and printed circuit boards.

Out of warranty damage to the 7045A-C3/7045A-CT system can occur if this practice is not strictly followed.

Chapter 5: Advanced Serverboard Setup 5-3 Connecting Data Cables The cables used to transfer data from the peripheral devices have been carefully routed to prevent them from blocking the fl ow of cooling air that moves through the system from front to back.

Place the heatsink on top of the CPU so that the four mounting holes are aligned with those on the retention mechanism.
Chapter 5: Advanced Serverboard Setup 5-9 Installing Memory Modules Insert the desired number of DIMMs into the memory slots. The memory scheme is interleaved, so you must install two modules at a time, beginning with DIMM 1A and DIMM 1B, then DIMM 2A and DIMM 2B and fi nally DIMM 3A and DIMM 3B.

Chapter 5: Advanced Serverboard Setup 5-1 1 5-7 Adding PCI Cards The X7DCA-3/X7DCA-i has one PCI-Express x16 slot, one PCI-Express x4 slot (in a x16 slot), two 64-bit 133/100 MHz PCI-X slots and two PCI 33 MHz slots. The SC743TQ-865-SQ chassis can accommodate up to seven PCI expansion cards.

Chapter 5: Advanced Serverboard Setup 5-21 5-10 Jumper Settings Explanation of Jumpers T o modify the operation of the serverboard, jumpers can be used to choose between optional settings. Jumpers create shorts between two pins to change the function of the con- nector .

The default setting is Disabled. Both jumpers must be set to the same setting See the table on the right for jumper settings.

Chapter 6: Advanced Chassis Setup 6-3 6-2 Front Control Panel The front control panel must be connected to the JF1 connector on the serverboard to provide you with system status and alarm indications. A ribbon cable has bundled these wires together to simplify this connection.
6-4 S uper W orkstation 7045A-C3/7045A-CT User's Manual 6-3 System Fans T wo 8-cm PWM chassis fans provide air intake while one 9-cm PWM exhaust fan expels hot air from the chassis. All are low-noise fans that result in very low system noise levels.

Do not touch the backplane with any metal objects and make sure no ribbon cables touch the backplane or obstruct the airfl ow holes.

Chapter 7: BIOS 7-1 Chapter 7 BIOS 7-1 Introduction This chapter describes the Phoenix BIOS™ Setup utility for the X7DCA-3/X7DCA-i. The Phoenix ROM BIOS is stored in a fl ash chip and can be easily upgraded using a fl oppy disk-based program.

Then press the <Enter> key to save the data. System Date Using the arrow keys, highlight the month, day and year fi elds, and enter the correct data.

Chapter 7: BIOS 7-5 CHS Format (A vailable for Primary/Master only) The following items will be displayed by the BIOS: T ype: This item displays the type of IDE or SA T A Device. Cylinders: This item indicates the status of Cylinders. Headers: This item indicates the number of headers.

Native Mode Operation Select the native mode for A T A. The options are Parallel A T A, Serial A T A, Both and Auto .
Chapter 7: BIOS 7-7 7-4 Advanced Setup Choose Advanced from the Phoenix BIOS Setup Utility main menu with the ar- row keys. Y ou should see the following display . The items with a triangle beside them have sub menus that can be accessed by highlighting the item and pressing <Enter>.

The options are S1 , S3 and S1S3. Power Button Behavior If set to Instant-Off , the system will power off immediately as soon as the user hits the power button.
Chapter 7: BIOS 7-9 will be reserved for Video BIOS ROM access only . Select Uncached to disable this function and make this area available for other devices.

7-12 S uper W orkstation 7045A-C3/7045A-CT User's Manual USB Host Controller 2 Select Enabled to activate USB Host Controller 2. The settings are Enabled and Disabled. Legacy USB Support This setting allows you to enable support for Legacy USB devices.
Chapter 7: BIOS 7-13 Execute Disable Bit (A vailable when supported by the CPU and the OS) Set to Enabled to enable Execute Disable Bit and allow the processor to classify areas in memory where an app.

Direct Cache Access (A vailable when supported by the CPU) Set to Enable to route inbound network IO traffi c directly into processor caches to reduce memory latency and improve network performance.
Chapter 7: BIOS 7-15 Base I/O Address This setting allows you to select the base I/O address for serial port B. The options are 3F8, 2F8 , 3E8 and 2E8. Interrupt This setting allows you to select the IRQ (interrupt request) for serial port B. The options are IRQ3 and IRQ4.

Chapter 7: BIOS 7-17 Console Connection This item allows you to decide how the console redirection is to be connected: either Direct or V ia Modem. Continue CR after POST This item allows you to decide whether you want to continue with the console redirection after POST routines.

Chapter 7: BIOS 7-19 Existing Event Log Number This item displays the number of the existing event log. Event Log Control System Firmware Progress Enable this function to log the POST progress. The options are Enabled and Disabled . BIOS POST Errors Enabling this function to log POST errors.

Appendix B: BIOS POST Codes B-1 Appendix B BIOS POST Codes This section lists the POST (Power On Self T est) codes for the PhoenixBIOS. POST codes are divided into two categories: recoverable and terminal. Recovera ble PO ST Er rors When a recoverable type of error occurs during POST , the BIOS will display an POST code that describes the problem.
