Control functions 10 ESU10292 Main switch The main switch controls the ignition and lighting systems. The various positions are described below. Off The ignition circuit is sw itched off. The key can be removed onl y in this position. On The ignition circuit is sw itched on.

Control functions 14 NOT ICE ECS00030 ● If the knock control system “ KC S ” indi- cator light comes on, the fuel tank may not have been filled with the recom- mended fuel.
Control functions 15 Fuel meter The display seg m ents of the fuel m eter disap- pear towards “ E ” (Empty) as t he fuel level de- creases. When only one segment is left near “ E ” , the fuel level warning indicator and the warning light come on.
Control functions 16 The fuel level warning indicator, warning light, and all segments of the fuel meter w arn the rider of the above problems by flashing con- tinuously. If this occurs, h ave a Yamaha dealer inspect the snowmobile as soon as possible.
Control functions 17 ror code will flash slowly in the tripme- ter/odometer display. Note the error code, and then have a Yamaha dealer ins pect the snowmobile as soon as possible. NOTICE: Do not continue to operate the engine longer than necessary if there is an error code to avoid possible engine damage.

Control functions 19 ● Do not use an automotive cigaret te light- er or other accessory with a plug that gets hot because the jack can be dam- aged. ESU10550 Brake l e ver The snowmobile is stopped by braki ng the en- tire drive system. Squeeze the brake lever towards the handle - bar grip to stop the snowmobile .
Control functions 20 NOT ICE ECS00140 Make sure that all cables and wires are in place when closing the shroud. ESU10731 Shroud and covers Securely fasten the shroud and covers before operating the snowmobile. (See page 49 for removal and installation proc edures.

Control functions 22 ESU10680 Passenger grip warmer swi t ch (PZ50VT) The passenger grip warmer switch controls the electrically heated pass enger grips. ESU10801 Backres t (PZ50V T) The backrest is adjustable. To adjust the backrest angle 1. Open the bac krest zipper and loos en the backrest bolts.
Control functions 23 To install the storage pouch 1. Fasten the storage pouch upper buckles . 2. Pass the storage pouch lower s trap be- tween the bracket and the frame, and then fasten the buckle to secure the pouch. TIP ● Be sure to route the storage pouch lower strap above the bracket fasteners.
Control functions 24 ESU10621 Fuel Make sure there is suffic ient gasoline in the tank. W ARNING EWS00071 Gasoline and gasoline vapor s are ex- tremely flammable. To avoid fires and ex- plosions and to reduce the risk of injury when refueling, follow these instructions.
Control functions 25 Your Yamaha engine has been de signed to use premium unl eaded gasoline with a pump octane number [(R+M)/2] of 91 or higher, or a research octane number of 95 or higher. If the recommended fuel is not used, the en - gine may not perform as it should.
Control functions 26 PZ50 / PZ50MT / PZ50VT To increase the spring preload and thereby harden the suspens ion, turn the adjusting ring in direction (a). To decrease the spring pr e- load and thereby soften the suspension, turn the adjusting ring in direction (b).

Control functions 29 Rebound damping force The rebound damping force of each shock absorber can be adjusted by turning its re- bound damping force adjusting knob. To increase the rebound damping force, turn the adjusting k nob in direction (a). To de- crease the rebound damping force, turn the adjusting knob in direction (b).

Operation 37 ESU11320 Break- in There is never a more important period in the life of your engine than the period between 0 and 500 km (300 mi). For this reason, you should read the following material carefully . Since the engine is br and new, do not put an excessive load on it for the first 500 km (300 mi).
Operation 38 maximum performan ce until yo u are totally fa- miliar with the snowmobile ’ s handling and performance characteristics. The beginning operator s hould select a large flat area to become famil iar w ith the snowmo - bile. Make sure that this area is free of obsta- cles and other traffic .
Operation 39 risk of an accident. Do not t ry steeper or more difficult inclines until you have de- veloped your skill on gentle slopes. You should practice first on gentle slopes. Try more difficult c limbs only after you have de- veloped your skill.

Operation 41 ● Always check the drive tr ack for damage or maladjustment before operating the snowmobile. ● Do not operate the snowmobile if you find damage to the drive track. NOT ICE ECS00350 Ride on fresh snow frequently. Operating on ice or hard-packed snow will rapidly wear the slide runners.
Operation 42 ● Keep the right hand on the right handle- bar grip for steering, and grip the strap with the left hand to shift weight uphill for balance during traverse riding. ● Ride cautiously while using the strap. Do not accelerate or decelerate abruptly while holding onto the strap.
Operation 43 W ARNING EWS00321 ● Make sure that the throttle lever is fully released and the snowmobile is a t a full stop before shifting. ● Be sure to press the drive select switch only while the engine is idling.

Periodic maintenance a nd adjustment 53 W ARNING EWS00710 Be sure to use the specified spark plug and spark plug cap. Otherwise, the T.O.R.S. may not work properly. Spark plugs are produced in several different thread lengths. The thread length or reach is the distance from the spark plug gas ket seat to the end of the threaded portion.

Hold the pivot point of the throttle lever away from the th rottle switch by putting your thumb (above) and fo refinger (be- low) between the throttle lever pivot and the engine stop switch housin g. While holding the pivot point as described above, press the throttle lever gradually.
Periodic mainte n ance and adjustment 56 4. Place the ai r filter eleme nt frame in the original position, and then hook the fas- teners onto the frame. 5. Install the air f ilter case cover, an d then install the front cover (PZ50 / PZ50RT / PZ50GT / P Z50MT) or close the shroud (PZ50VT).

TIP ● The engine can also be warmed up by driv- ing the snowmobile for 10 – 15 minutes. ● After driving the snowmobile, allow the en- gine to idle for at least 10 seconds before turning it off.
Periodic mainte n ance and adjustment 58 7. Insert the dipstick into the oil filler hole, and then tighten the oil filler cap. 8. Connect the oil leve l gauge coupler. 9. Install the right side cov er (PZ50 / PZ50RT / PZ50GT / PZ50MT), or install the right side cover and the right upper cover, and then close the shroud (PZ50VT).
Periodic maintenance a nd adjustment 59 9. Remove the engine oil drain bolt to drain the oil from the crankcase. TIP Dispose o f used oil ac cording to local regula- tions. 10. Install the engine oil drain bolts, and then tighten them to the specified torques .

In addition, the cooling sy stem must be bl ed at the intervals specifie d in the periodic maintenance and lu br ication chart. W ARNING EWS00380 Do not remove the coolant res ervoir cap when the engine is hot.

TIP If you find any leaks, consult a Y amaha deal- er. 5. Install the right upper cover, and then in- stall the top cover (PZ50 / PZ50RT / PZ50GT / PZ50MT) or close the shroud (PZ50VT).

Rotate the secondary sliding sheave clockwise and push it s o that it separates from the secondary fixed sh eave. 8. Install the V-belt between the se condary fixed sheav e and the secondary s liding sheave.

Periodic maintenance a nd adjustment 65 Test the brake at a low speed when starting out to mak e sure that it is working properly. If the brake does not provide proper braking performance, inspect the brake for wear or brake fluid leakage. (See the following section for more details.

Periodic maintenance a nd adjustment 67 NOT ICE ECS00560 Avoid scratching the skis w hen loading and unloading the snowmobile, when riding in areas with little or no snow, or on sharp edges such as concrete, curbs, e tc. This will wear or damage the skis.

Observe the following precautions: ● Do not allow anyone to stand behind the snowmobile when the engine is running.

[ECS005 92] 6. Recheck alig nment and deflection. If nec- essary, repeat steps 3 to 5 until the prop- er adjustment is achiev ed.

Troubleshooting 76 ESU12396 Engine turns over but does not start 1. Fuel system ● No fuel supplied to combus tion cham- ber • No fuel in tank: Supply fuel. ↓ • Clogged fuel line: Clean fuel line. ↓ • Clogged injector: Ask a Yamaha deal er to inspect.
Troubleshooting 77 4. Connect the other end of the red (+) jumper cable to the positive (+) terminal of the booster battery. 5. Connect the bla ck ( – ) jumper cab le to the negative ( – ) terminal of the boos ter bat- tery. 6. Connect the other end of the bla ck ( – ) jumper cable to the negative ( – ) terminal of the discharged battery.

Storag e 79 ESU12433 Long-term storage requires s ome preventive procedures to guard against deterioration. Cleaning Thoroughly clean the snowmobile, inside and out, to remove the c orr osive salts and acids that can accumulate. Use Yam aha Mud, Grease, and Engine C leaner, or an eq uivalent product, to loosen mud, grease, and grime.
Storage 80 Surface protection Apply a coat of wax to p ainted surfaces. Apply suitable protectants to the exterior of the en - gine, drive track, and to other metal, plastic, and rubber parts. Battery Remove the battery from the snowmobile. Store it in a cool , dry place that is above 0 ° C (32 ° F), but less than 30 ° C (90 ° F).
