15 Preparations This chapter de scribes basic operations, s uch as navigating the menus, and first time se ttings to help you learn more about your camcor der . Getting Started Charging the Battery Pack The camcorder can be power ed with a battery pack or di rectly using the compact power adapter .
Preparations 16 • Y ou can also use the c ompact power adapter without attaching a battery pack. • When the compact power adapter is connected, even if a ba ttery is attached its power wi ll not be consumed. 1 Disconnect the co mpact power adapter from the ca mcorder.
17 Installing the Backup Battery The backup battery (lithium button battery CR1616) allows the ca mcorder to retain the date, time ( 23 ) and other camcorder s ettings while the power source is disconnected. Connect a power source to the camcor der when replacing the backup battery to retain the settings.
Preparations 18 Point the controller at the camcor der’ s r emote sensor when you press the buttons. Y ou can rotate the LCD panel 180 degrees to use the wireless controller from the fr ont of the camcor der .
19 Basic Operation of the Camcorder Operating Modes The camcorder’ s o perating mode is determined by the po sition of the switch. In the manual, indicates that a function is av ail able in the operating mode shown and indicates that the function is no t av ailable.

27 IMPORT ANT When recording movies, try to get a calm, stable picture. Excessive camcorder movement while shooting and extensive use of fas t zooms and panning can result in jittery scenes. In extreme cases, the playback of such scenes may result in visually induced motion sicknes s.
Video 28 Zooming: Optical, Advanced and Digital Zoom The camcor der of fers three types of zoom: optical, advance d and digital zoom. Y ou can als o change the zoom speed. 33 Returning to a Pre-marked Position If you wish to return to a particular scene later , mark the point with the zero set memory and the tape will stop at that point when you rewind/fast fo rward the tape. This function is operated with the wire less controlle r .

35 Advanced Function : Special Scene Recording Programs Recording in a very br ight ski resort or capturing the full colo rs of a sunset or a firewor ks display becomes as eas y as selectin g a Special Scene r ecording program. Video 36 [ PROGRAM AE] The camcor der sets the aperture and shutter speed. [B E A C H ] Use this mode to recor d on a sunny beach. It prev ents the subject from being underexposed. [ PORTRAIT] The camcor der uses a large aperture, achi eving a focus on the subject while blurring other distracting details.
37 Flexible Recording: Changing the Shutter Speed Use the automatic exposure (AE) program to use functi ons like the whit e balance or im age ef fects, o r to select the shutter speed. Use faster shutter speeds to record subjects moving qu ickly . Use slower shutter speeds to add motion blur , emphasizing the feel of movement.

Pow er Sou rc e The camcorder will not turn on or it turns off by its elf. The cassette compartment cover will not open or it st ops halfway while you insert or re move a tape.

63 Do’s and Don’ ts Camcorder • Do not carry the camcorder by the LCD panel. Be careful when closing the LCD panel. • Do not leave the ca mcorder in plac es subject to high temperatures (like the inside of a car under direct sunlight), or high humidity .
Additional Information 64 • Although the batte ry pack’ s oper ating temperature range is from 0 ° C to 40 ° C, the optimal range is from 10 ° C to 30 ° C. At cold temperatures, performance wi ll temporarily decline. W arm it in your pocket before use.
65 Lithium Button Battery • Do not pick up the battery using tweezers or other m e tal tools, as this will cause a short ci rcuit. • Wipe the battery with a clean dry cloth to ensur e proper co ntact.
